Salon Branoul : The Catcher in the Rye

Gisteravond ben ik naar Salon Branoul : The Catcher in the Rye geweest.

Every month, the New European Ensemble brings to you a new mix of literature, poetry and music in Salon Branoul.

The American writer J.D. Salinger was born on January 1st, 1919. He wrote one of the most successful novels of all time in 1951: The Catcher in the Rye. The novel is about Holden Caulfield, a teenager who roams around New York City. He wants to experience amazing adventures and absolutely hates Phonies. The text is combined with the colourful sounds o fFrederic Rzewski’s ‘Plugs and Leaks.’

Salon Branoul : The Catcher in the Rye

Frederic Rzewski – Leak 1

If you really want to hear about it, the fist thing you’ll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my louse childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don’t feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth.

Frederic Rzewski – Plug 1

The first thing I did when I got off at Penn Station …

Frederic Rzewski – Leak 2

I told the driver to take me down to Ernie’s.

Frederic Rzewski – Plug 2

Even though I was so late, old Ernie’s was jam-packed.

Frederic Rzewski – Leak 3

I got a cab outside the hotel, but I didn’t have the faintest damn idea where I was going. I had no place to go.

Frederic Rzewski – Plug 3

It was early when I got there, so I just sat down on one of those leather couches right near the clock in the lobby and watched the girls.

Frederic Rzewski – Leak 4

I remember my brother Allie once asked my brother D.B. …

Frederic Rzewski – Plug 4

I’ve lived in New York all my life, and I know Central Park like that back of my hand …

Morton Feldman – Variations – 1st half

“What?” I said to old Phoebe. She said something to me, but I didn’t hear her.

Morton Feldman – Variations – 2nd half

That’s about all I’m going tot tell about. I could probably tell you what I did after I went home, and how I got sick and all, and what school I’m supposed to go to next fall, after I get out of here, but I don’t feel like it.
